The Dos and Don’ts of Back Surgery Recovery

Wondering what to expect after your back surgery? If you are thinking about how to keep on with your daily activities until your doctor gives you a go signal to resume your normal routine, it is good to know the dos and don’ts to guide you during your recovery. 

First, let’s talk about the back surgery recovery time. 

Pre-surgery fitness level and age are significant factors for back surgery recovery time. Many patients take about 4-6 weeks before reaching the expected level of mobility and function. However, the recovery time of back surgery depends on the type of procedure made and the after surgery care. 

Here are some dos and don’ts to help you with your after surgery care. 

1. Take Pain Medication. 

As instructed by your surgeon, taking pain relief medication and pain relief management products will help with your back surgery recovery time. Make sure to take your pain medication on time to decrease the severity of pain afterward. 

2. Physical Therapy.

Most doctors recommend physical therapy for after surgery care. Physical therapy and gentle exercises will aid you in regaining full range of motion and going back on track with your daily activities, as well as help you fully recover.

3. Wear a Brace.

Aside from physical therapy, your surgeon may recommend you to wear a brace as part of your after surgery care. This will help you stabilize your back faster, especially when sitting or walking.

7. Don’t Rush.

Many patients are eager to resume their normal activities while in their back surgery recovery time. Bear in mind that complete healing can take several months. Returning to activities too fast can not only lengthen the recuperation period but can also cause further damage.

6. Don’t bend and lift heavy objects.

Following surgery, it’s best to avoid lifting anything heavier than 10 pounds. Also, when picking up light objects, avoid leaning over at the waist but bend your knees or squat instead. 

7. Do Not Smoke.
